You know, I’ve been wanting to say this for a while, but haven’t really done so, mostly because my number of followers is… well, pitiful, lol. But I was recently watching Tom’s appearance on the Graham Norton show on youtube, and made the unfortunate mistake of reading some of the comments left. Needless to say, I was shocked and disgusted by some of the truly unkind and ugly things some of the people said about Mr. Hiddleston. Shocked, not because there’s an abundance of assholes out there, but because I think you would have to truly be an asshole of infinite proportions to actually say anything bad about Tom Hiddleston.
I’m sure like a lot of Tom’s fans, I first noticed him after seeing the first Thor film, and being really blown away by his performance as Loki. He stole the movie, and despite the Marvel executives best attempts to paint Loki as a black and white, one dimensional villain, Tom infused the character, in “Thor”, “The Avengers” and “Thor: The Dark World” with so much incredible depth, complexity, vulnerability and sympathy, that you instantly saw yourself moved to compassion and care for him. And that’s true of all of Tom’s performances. He’s an incredible actor, who has such a gift for bringing out the subtlest and more defining aspects of any character and showing them to the audience. Not telling them. Showing them. Through expression, through tone, through physicality and delivery of lines. Tom shows you who a character really is, even when the dialog is working against that. I’ll never forget how captivated I was by the end scene of the first Thor film, when he’s fighting with Thor, and just the intensity of Loki’s EMOTION, the absolute heartbreak and devastation that you can see in Tom’s acting is almost overwhelming. It’s so, so intense, and again, we see that kind of truth and realness in all of Tom’s work.
Of course, again like a lot of you I’m sure, I became interested in who this man was who was playing Loki, and I looked him up, which in turn led to watching an interview with him on youtube. Again, something I’m certain a lot of you are familiar with. But I wanted to talk about the thing I noticed about Tom which immediately drew me in, and which has continued to be one of the main reasons for my admiration of him. And that was simply just how much Tom CARED.
I see people making fun of Tom’s tendency to ramble or talk at length. But I think that’s one of the most amazing things about him. When he’s talking to people, when he’s talking to interviewers, and they ask him a question, no matter how silly or stupid it is, no matter how many times Tom’s been asked the exact same thing, he gives a genuine, thoughtful, careful answer, EVERY.TIME. Every other person I’ve seen, every other actor or singer or celebrity of any kind, I’ve never seen do that. Most of them you can even see the active frustration or annoyance or just plain boredom and disinterest in what they’re doing, their desire to NOT be there, talking to whoever. And you can’t even blame them. Giving interviews has to be horrible at times, especially answering the same questions over and over. But Tom just tries so damned hard, he really TRIES, AND gives so much time and energy to actually giving these interviewers, who are just doing their job, something actually worth their while, something they can actually use and get excited and interested about. He doesn’t just give basic, one word answers, doesn’t get frustrated or bored or disgusted. He’s shows as much passion and thoughtfulness when answering questions about Loki as he does talking about any Shakespearean character. And what that says to me about Tom is, not only does he care about ALL of the work he takes on, that he treats every project and every job with equal importance, but that he has respect, genuine respect, for people. He doesn’t just consider it a job or a hassle or a burden when he has to talk to people. He treats the engagement with sincere care and interest, and in turn shows whoever it is he’s talking to that they matter, that their questions and their job matters, and that they aren’t wasting his time or imposing on him. I don’t think most people realize how BIG a deal that is. Tom treats people like they’re important, no matter who it is, and to a lot of people, that means everything in the world.
I’ve never seen a more genuinely positive person than Tom. Not affected positivity, or forced positivity. Not fake. He is GENUINELY, SINCERELY an incredibly positive person, who isn’t blind or ignorant to the ugliness of life and in the world, but who instead chooses to focus on the beauty. I can say that of probably no one I know. But I can say it of Tom. And you have to admire that, because it’s damn hard. Case in point, the ignorant, ugly, mean-spirited shit comments on youtube about Tom himself. People can be and often are real assholes, real pieces of shit. And so it just makes my admiration of Tom all the greater, that even with that, he treats everyone kindly and respectfully and always gives them all of his attention and time. The man just CARES, sincerely, and that’s so, so amazing. He’s the very definition of class. Class is defined by how you comport yourself and treat others. And Tom treats others and comports himself with the absolute greatest respect and compassion I think I’ve ever seen. You add his immense sophistication, intelligence and talent to that, and you might start to see why it is he has so many fans and admirers. Yes, Tom is extremely handsome, a very good looking man, and it’s great! But I wish sometimes some of his fans wouldn’t objectify him so much, and instead focus on what makes him truly exceptional, which is all of the things I’ve spoken about above. He’s a good man, a good person, who gives so much to everyone, whether in his work or in personal interaction, and that’s ultimately what makes him special, along with his talent as an actor.
Anyway, that’s all I have to say. Anyone who says anything unkind about this man has some serious issues, and I think they need to sit down and reevaluate their attitude and perspective, and do what they can to overhaul it. Because there’s something horribly wrong with a world where people shit on someone like Tom Hiddleston. When they shit on someone for caring.
